GRA NEWSLETTER Salvage APL Panama
Goodrich Riquelme y Asociados, acted as local attorneys for the worldwide salvage company Titan Maritime LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Crowley Maritime Corporation, in the salvage efforts of the M/V "APL Panama", a 835-foot and 52,267 DWT containership with a capacity of 4,038 TEU, grounded last Dec. 25 on a public beach off a residential neighborhood in the tourist port of Ensenada, Mexico. The successful refloating was one of the most challenging and significant commercial salvage endeavors ever undertaken in maritime history and attracted the interest of the shipping industry worldwide. Much of the cargo onboard the vessel consisted of electronic and automotive parts bound for Mexican factories. The ship was safely redelivered to MS Mare Britannicum Schiffahrtsges Mbh & Co., KG on March 12 at anchorage about 4 miles southwest of the Ensenada breakwater.
Carlos Moran, a member of Goodrich´s maritime practice group provided on-site advice to Titan during the whole salvage operation and was assisted by the litigation, environmental, customs and immigration practices of said full-service Mexican law firm.
